Civic Action Planning Institutes

Colleges and universities that have committed to developing campus civic action plans by signing the Campus Compact’s 30th Anniversary Action Statement can join one of three fall Civic Action Planning Institutes being held throughout the country. The agenda includes an overview of principles and goals of the 30th Anniversary Action Statement, introduction to campus civic action planning processes and exploration of key planning concepts. While registration is required, there is no registration fee. Institutions are responsible for their own travel and lodging costs.

Invitation to Pilot a Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum Program

AASHE is seeking four to six partner institutions or organizations to help develop and pilot a Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum program. The overall goal of this program is to significantly accelerate the infusion of sustainability content into curriculum. The program will build on the expertise of partner institutions by supporting them in organizing workshops that are open to faculty from other institutions in the region. Applications to serve in this role are due by Monday, Aug. 1.

2016 Fair Trade Regional Conferences

Day-long, Fair Trade workshops, seminars and networking will be held in New England, the mid-Atlantic and southern California to gain a deeper understanding of the Fair Trade movement, learn from fellow organizers and swap stories over a cup of Fair Trade coffee. Loyola Marymount University (C.A.) hosts Sept. 10; Eastern Nazarene College (M.A.) hosts Sept. 17; and the mid-Atlantic conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Sept. 24.

Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop

Emory University, in partnership with AASHE, is offering a Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop from Jan. 5-6, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia. Through an intensive two days of presentations, exercises, discussions, reflection and planning, participants will become familiar with the philosophy of change in higher education developed through the Ponderosa Project at Northern Arizona University and adapted at Emory University in the Piedmont Project. Participants will also experience a range of workshop strategies, hear local experts, enjoy outdoor place-based activities and dialogue with faculty from around the country to adapt the Piedmont/Ponderosa model to their own campus. Applications are due by Oct. 28.

EPA's National Building Competition

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosts the nationwide competition, which takes place from Sept 1 - Nov. 30, that invites interested parties to register in a program geared around saving energy and water. Participants are provided with toolkits focused on energy and water saving activities that they can share to make the competition fun and interactive. Top achievers by building category will be recognized. Registration closes July 17.

Outstanding Higher Education Award Call for Applications

The National Recycling Coalition is seeking nominations for its annual awards, including the Outstanding Higher Education Award. This award recognizes exceptional programs in recycling and especially those that connect higher education and industry. Winners will be honored at Resource Recycling's annual conference in New Orleans from Aug. 30-Sept. 2. Deadline to apply is July 6.

Pedagogy in Education for Sustainable Development Webinar Series

The Sustainability Curriculum Consortium, in partnership with AASHE, is offering a four-part webinar series beginning June 21. Susan Santone, executive director of Creative Change Educational Solutions, and Jess Gerrior, director of Learning & Practice at the Sustainability Curriculum Consortium and a Ph.D. fellow at Antioch New England, are facilitators. One registration will secure access codes for all 4 webinars. There is no fee for this webinar series, however, registration is required.

The Sustainability Movement on Campus: Forming a Library Action Plan for Engagement

In this online, asynchronous course from July 5-31, participants will be led through the creation of an action plan that matches the needs of their library and institution and suits their comfort level for professional engagement. The instructors will offer individual feedback to participants.

Architecture at Zero 2016

The Architecture at Zero 2016 competition challenge is to create a zero net energy student housing project at the San Francisco State University campus. This competition is open to students anywhere in the world. Up to $25,000 in total prize money will be awarded to student and professional winners. Transdisciplinary Research Leadership Survey

The Leopold Leadership Program, START, Future Earth and the University of Colorado Boulder have launched an online survey to gauge global needs for transdisciplinary research around the world. The survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete and is open to researchers.

Scholarship Funding for Undocumented Students in 16 States

TheDream.US Opportunity Scholarship Program invites students who have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Temporary Protected Status (TPS) status and who reside in locked-out states where they are either barred from attending college or required to pay out-of-state tuition to apply for scholarship. The scholarship will offer up to $80,000 over four years to obtain a bachelor's degree from either Eastern Connecticut State University or Delaware State University. Funding will help cover tuition, fees, and on-campus housing and meals. Deadline to apply is June 9.

Call for Abstracts: Sustainability and Social Science Research Symposium

The Sustainability and Social Science Research Symposium, May 17-19, 2017 at University of Michigan, aims to document and disseminate the wealth of experiences on sustainability and social science research by providing social science researchers focusing on sustainability an opportunity to present and discuss their work (e.g. empirical work, case studies, teaching and learning innovations, applied projects). Virtual Climate Change Conference: Views from the Humanities

The Environmental Humanities Initiative at the University of California at Santa Barbara is currently hosting an online climate change conference that approaches the issue of climate change from the perspective of the humanities, rather than from that of the sciences and also in an attempt to host a zero emissions academic conference. The digital approach hosts conference keynotes, guest speakers, presentations and Q&As on its website. The conference talks and Q&A are hosted on the website, YouTube and SoundCloud and will be available until May 24.

Call for Nominations: 2016 Climate Leadership Awards for Two-Year Institutions

The Second Nature Climate Leadership Awards is seeking nominations from two-year institutions that are current Climate Leadership Commitment signatories. In partnership with USGBC's Center for Green Schools, the Climate Leadership Awards recognize innovative and advanced leadership in sustainability, climate mitigation and resilience at signatory campuses of the Climate Leadership Commitments. Power Shift 2016: Recharge

In 2016, the Energy Action Coalition's Power Shift project will converge at four locations across the U.S. Designed to empower, support and mobilize youth climate justice leaders, the 2016 regional Power Shifts will train young leaders about organizing and connecting with others to amplify the voice and power of local communities to be heard at the national level. The four locations are Northeast (Philadelphia, Pa.), Southeast (Orlando, Fla.), Midwest (Detroit, Mich.) and West (exact California location to be determined).

College Sports Sustainability Makeover Contest Extension Announced

A two-day extension has been granted for colleges and universities to enter to win over $50,000 worth of prizes and assistance to kick-start or upgrade sustainability programming in athletic operations. Administered through the Green Sports Alliance, the winning two campuses will receive 10 brand new customizable recycling bins donated by Max-R or GreenDrop, a full compostable food service product upgrade donated by Eco-Products, and on-site expert sports facility assessments, workshops and recommendations from ESPN and CU Boulder sports sustainability experts. Certificate in Sustainability and Behavior Change

University of California San Diego Extension's new certificate in Sustainability and Behavior Change provides an online setting for an advanced educational training in conversation psychology, behavior change strategies and community engagement tools. The aim is to help practitioners build successful sustainability projects and programs.
