Fair Trade Photofest 2016
In honor of Fair Trade Month, Fair Trade Campaigns is hosting a photo contest that showcases America’s love for Fair Trade products. Running Oct. 1–28, weekly prizes will be awarded and the grand prize winner will receive a trip to South America.

Online Registration Closes Sept. 15: 2016 AASHE Conference & Expo

Webinar: Preparing for Campus Sustainability Month
October is Campus Sustainability Month. AASHE is hosting a webinar featuring speakers from University of Massachusetts, University of Washington, University of North Florida, and ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge that will include ideas and inspiration for how to take advantage of Campus Sustainability Month to engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become sustainability leaders. Speakers will share examples of how campuses can participate, lessons learned and suggestions to leverage sustainability on your campus and beyond.
Northwest Earth Institute EcoChallenge
Hosted by the Northwest Earth Institute, this challenge asks participants to stick with one action to reduce their environmental impact for two weeks. Sign up as an individual, class or university team starting now. This year's EcoChallenge takes place October 14-28.

AASHE 2016 will focus on meeting sustainability challenges from outside academia. Themed Beyond the Campus, this conference will bring together thousands of sustainability champions from around the world to share ideas and be inspired by sustainability leaders. Online registration closes Sept. 15.
Campus Sustainability Month 2016
October is Campus Sustainability Month, during which time institutions around the world engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become leaders for sustainability. AASHE invites members to join the celebration by hosting events on their campuses. To help campuses get involved, AASHE has negotiated a discounted rate for members to screen one of four sustainability films offered through Bullfrog Films.
2017 Climate Leadership Awards
Offered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The Climate Registry and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, the Climate Leadership Awards is a national awards program that seeks to recognize the outstanding voluntary work that organizations and individuals pursue in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience to climate change. The deadline to apply is Sept. 26.
SEED Center 2016 Green Genome Awards
The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) is offering cash prizes to five community colleges for their exemplary leadership and commitment to sustainability education. The Community College Green Genome Awards funds should be used to support the college's enhancement, expansion or creation of a practice or program related to clean technology education and training. Applications are accepted through Sept. 9.
ACTS Sustainability Photography Competition
Aiming to raise awareness of sustainability and associated concepts through a fun and artistic medium, the Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS) invites staff and students from educational organizations to upload a photographic entry to Instagram or Facebook on the theme “River to Reef”. Finalist entries will be exhibited at the 16th International ACTS Conference, from Nov. 2-4, and the winner will be selected by a jury and awarded $1000 ($763 U.S.) from supporting partner aquaBUBBLER. Deadline to enter is Sept. 30.
Politics and Environment Education Project Webinar Series
The Politics and Environment Education Project has recruited academic and non-governmental organization experts to lead discussions on politics and the environment. The format is 15 minutes of presentation followed by 45 minutes of Q&A. The first webinar is Sept. 7.
Starting a Campus Kitchen Informational Session
The Campus Kitchens Project is a national nonprofit that empowers student leaders to create innovative and sustainable solutions to hunger by preparing and delivering food that would otherwise go to waste to those that are food insecure. How to Start a Campus Kitchen informational sessions will consist of a video-webinar presentation about the process of starting a Campus Kitchen at a college or university. The session will allow time for a questions and answers and will highlight information about the new Campus Kitchen planner and start-up grant opportunities. The first session is on Sept. 7.

Call for Proposals: 2017 Presidential Summit on Climate Leadership
Second Nature invites the Climate Leadership Network and beyond to submit proposals for sessions, workshops and presentations for the 2017 Presidential Climate Leadership Summit, happening Feb. 13-15, 2017, in Tempe, Arizona. Proposals are welcomed from all disciplines, backgrounds and perspectives. Priority will be given to presidents and sustainability teams from Climate Leadership Network institutions and Second Nature partners. Second Nature is also seeking volunteer reviewers from the higher education field.
The 2016 Nation Student Writing Contest
The Nation launched an annual Student Writing Contest to identify, support and reward progressive student journalists writing, reporting and blogging. In this year's contest, The Nation presents this premise and question: "It’s clear that the political system in the United States isn’t working for many young people. What do you think is the central issue for your generation in Election 2016?" Entries will be accepted through Sept. 19.
AASHE Member Discount: ACCO Integrated Renewables Workshop

Project Green Challenge 2016
In honor of Campus Sustainability Month, Project Green Challenge 2016 invites students to sign up to receive daily challenges related to living and decision-making that reflects sustainability. A cash prize and trip to San Francisco will be awarded.
Global Climate Change Week
Global Climate Change Week (GCCW), Oct. 10-16, 2016, is an initiative designed to encourage academic communities to engage with each other and policy makers regarding climate change action and solutions. In addition to resources for faculty and students, the GCCW website contains information on how to organize Global Climate Change Week on campus.
Project Green Challenge 2016
Taking place Oct. 1-31, Project Green Challenge 2016 invites college students to participate in 30 days of sustainability-themed challenges. Each challenge delves into a different theme and offers four levels of engagement. Participants receive points and the top 20 daily submissions are awarded prizes. Up to 16 finalists will be flown to San Francisco to attend a four-day eco-summit in late November.
Sustainability Curriculum Consortium's Online Dialogue Series: The 2030 Development Agenda
The Sustainability Curriculum Consortium's (SCC) upcoming Online Dialogue focuses on the key components of the 2030 Development Agenda: the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sendai Framework on disaster risk. The two remaining webinars are Aug. 9 and Aug. 23 and will cover Paris Climate Agreement and Sendai Framework respectively. While there is no fee to participate in these online webinars, registration is required. One registration includes access to all webinars.
2017 Presidential Climate Leadership Summit
Second Nature and the Climate Leadership Network will meet in Tempe, Arizona, Feb. 13-15, 2017, for the 10th annual Presidential Climate Leadership Summit, designed for campus sustainability teams including presidents, faculty and staff. Second Nature is currently accepting proposals for sessions, workshops, and presentations from all disciplines.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosts the nationwide competition, which takes place from Sept. 1 - Nov. 30, that invites interested parties to register in a program to save energy and water. Participants are provided with toolkits focused on energy and water saving activities that they can share to make the competition fun and interactive. Top achievers by building category will be recognized. Registration closes July 31.
Living Lab Research Project
The United Kingdom's Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) invites contributions from those in higher education any where in the world who are implementing living labs, both on and off campus. The project will research how living labs are structured, living lab scope versus institutional context, key challenges and benefits, and implementation and expansion of living labs. The results will be shared publicly.

TIAA-CREF Low Carbon Social Choice Fund for University Professors
This recent AASHE blog post by guest author Erica Frank, founder and president of NextGenU.org, discusses TIAA-CREF's socially-responsible fund for university professors, and provides a draft letter that can be sent to a Human Resources director requesting that faculty have the option to subscribe to the fund. In addition to meeting broad environmental, social and governance criteria that are consistent with sustainability principles, the fund selects companies that demonstrate leadership in managing and mitigating their current carbon emissions and have limited exposure to oil, gas and coal reserves.
Civic Action Planning Institutes
Colleges and universities that have committed to developing campus civic action plans by signing the Campus Compact’s 30th Anniversary Action Statement can join one of three fall Civic Action Planning Institutes being held throughout the country. The agenda includes an overview of principles and goals of the 30th Anniversary Action Statement, introduction to campus civic action planning processes and exploration of key planning concepts. While registration is required, there is no registration fee. Institutions are responsible for their own travel and lodging costs.
Invitation to Pilot a Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum Program
AASHE is seeking four to six partner institutions or organizations to help develop and pilot a Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum program. The overall goal of this program is to significantly accelerate the infusion of sustainability content into curriculum. The program will build on the expertise of partner institutions by supporting them in organizing workshops that are open to faculty from other institutions in the region.
Applications to serve in this role are due by Monday, Aug. 1.

2016 Fair Trade Regional Conferences
Day-long, Fair Trade workshops, seminars and networking will be held in New England, the mid-Atlantic and southern California to gain a deeper understanding of the Fair Trade movement, learn from fellow organizers and swap stories over a cup of Fair Trade coffee. Loyola Marymount University (C.A.) hosts Sept. 10; Eastern Nazarene College (M.A.) hosts Sept. 17; and the mid-Atlantic conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Sept. 24.
Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop
Emory University, in partnership with AASHE, is offering a Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop from Jan. 5-6, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia. Through an intensive two days of presentations, exercises, discussions, reflection and planning, participants will become familiar with the philosophy of change in higher education developed through the Ponderosa Project at Northern Arizona University and adapted at Emory University in the Piedmont Project. Participants will also experience a range of workshop strategies, hear local experts, enjoy outdoor place-based activities and dialogue with faculty from around the country to adapt the Piedmont/Ponderosa model to their own campus. Applications are due by Oct. 28.

Outstanding Higher Education Award Call for Applications
The National Recycling Coalition is seeking nominations for its annual awards, including the Outstanding Higher Education Award. This award recognizes exceptional programs in recycling and especially those that connect higher education and industry. Winners will be honored at Resource Recycling's annual conference in New Orleans from Aug. 30-Sept. 2. Deadline to apply is July 6.
