AASHE 2019 Workshop: Research for Sustainability: Investigating Mass Timber as Green Alternative
The full-day pre-conference workshop on research for sustainability will evaluate the use of mass timber in the construction industry from a sustainability perspective. This event aims to bring leading scholars and researchers together with architects and engineers to introduce the audience to the latest developments in timber research and to discuss new wood products, processes and concepts and their potential as competitors to concrete or steel. Attendees will also examine the environmental benefits of this renewable material and compare it to conventional construction materials in terms of life cycle environmental impact life cycle cost.
AASHE 2019 Scholarships
Individuals from an AASHE member institution in good standing that are in need of financial assistance to attend the AASHE Conference and Expo can apply for a scholarship between now and June 28. Scholarship recipients will receive up to the cost of a full conference registration (valued at $250 for students and $575 for regular attendees).
AASHE Refocus Workshop: Leading Deeper Change in Higher Education
This leadership development program is designed to enable practitioners to generate deeper organizational change and establish sustainability as a strategic priority. Hosted by the University of Illinois at Chicago from Aug. 8-9, the workshop aims to highlight a very broad set of topics and disciplines relevant to leading a transformational sustainability program and help attendees apply the material. The deadline to apply is June 29.
Academic Bicycle Challenge
The Academic Bicycle Challenge is for college and university staff, faculty and students to track their cycled miles for a chance to appear on one of eight different leaderboard types. The competition will reveal a global comparison of cycling activities between universities, academic disciplines, self-generated teams and individuals.
GRITS Tool Available to Portfolio Manager Users for Free
In recognition of becoming an Energy Star partner, the Sustainable Endowments Institute has made available a free version of the Green Revolving Investment Tracking System (GRITS) available to users of the U.S. EPA’s Energy Star Portfolio Manager tool. GRITS is a project-management platform used to calculate, track and share the energy, financial and carbon savings data from sustainability projects.
Making Sustainability Accessible: A Curriculum Development Workshop
The University of Kansas and Johnson County Community College are collaborating on this faculty development curriculum workshop, being held Aug 8-9 at Johnson County Community College. Designed to help faculty from all disciplines make connections to sustainability within their curriculum, this workshop will explore themes of sense of place, community wellness and cooperative problem-solving to make sustainability concepts relatable to students entering any field. The deadline to register is Aug. 5. The University of Kansas and Johnson County Community College are regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.
Leading Deeper Change in Higher Education Workshop
During this 1.5-day workshop, participants will be introduced to Refocus: a leadership development program designed to enable practitioners to generate deep organizational change and establish sustainability as a strategic priority. The workshop aims to prepare participants to lead a transformational sustainability program.
World Environment Day Mask Challenge
From May 24 through World Environment Day (June 5), the United Nations Environment Program is asking people to commit to action that supports clean air, such as biking to work or school, using public transit or choosing non-toxic paints and furnishings. Challenge participants are encouraged to post their actions to social media in order to raise awareness for clean air.
Call for Submissions: Research to Action: The Science of Drawdown
In partnership with Project Drawdown, Pennsylvania State University will hold the first international conference on climate solutions, based on the book Drawdown, The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming. The three-day conference, happening Sept. 16-18, will provide opportunities to learn about and discuss the science underlying Project Drawdown’s portfolio of 100 solutions to reverse global warming. Conference organizers invite abstract submissions for research poster presentations and artwork/demonstrations. A selection of poster presenters will be asked to participate as panelists, discussants or lightning talk presenters. The final deadline for abstract submissions is Aug. 15.

The full schedule of pre-conference (Sunday, Oct. 27) and post-conference (Wednesday, Oct. 30) workshops is now available and includes half-day and full-day learning sessions. These workshops are not included in the full-conference registration price and are offered for a separate fee.
AASHE Member Discount: $100 Off Sustainability Certification Through ISSP
The International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) offers students, faculty and staff from AASHE-member schools a $100 discount on the ISSP Sustainability Associate (ISSP-SA) credential exam. The program is designed to recognize the knowledge, skills and abilities of those in the sustainability field, including students with knowledge of core sustainability concepts.
AASHE Workshop: Sustainability, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workshop
Designed for faculty, administrators, staff and student activists of all disciplines, this workshop aims to give attendees the tools to interconnect and integrate sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion into their campus, curriculum and departments. This event will take place June 12 - 14 at North Hennepin Community College. Registration closes June 3.
Call for Student Abstracts: HBCU Climate Change Conference
The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, in collaboration with Texas Southern University, invites student abstracts for oral and poster presentations for its seventh annual HBCU Climate Change Conference, happening Nov. 13 - 16, 2019, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The conference will address issues related to climate justice, adaptation, community resilience, global climate issues, and other major climate change topics. Proposals are due June 1.
Campus Compact National Conference: Call for Proposals
Campus Compact invites proposals for Campus Compact's national conference, the Compact20, happening March 29 - April 1, 2020, in Seattle, Washington. Proposals should explore and connect to the conference theme – The Promise of Full Participation: Democracy, Opportunity, Voice. Proposals are welcomed that represent work undertaken through public, private, two-year, four-year, and graduate colleges and universities, along with organizations outside of higher education, including community-based partners. All sessions should be interactive, contribute to equity and inclusion goals, and represent a multiplicity of perspectives. Proposals are due June 30.
SRI Conference Student Scholarship
This scholarship is coordinated by a group of First Affirmative Financial Network emerita and longtime affiliates to bring young people to The SRI Conference, being held Nov. 11-15 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The deadline to apply is July 8. Winners will be announced in late September.
AASHE Awards Judge Recruitment
AASHE is recruiting a jury of higher education sustainability leaders for the 2019 AASHE Sustainability Awards. Judges will review case studies and research related to higher education sustainability. Judging will occur over an eight-week period between June and July.
Call for Earth Day Photographs
To celebrate Earth Day, AASHE invites campuses to submit photographs from Earth Day festivities and activities to the Campus Sustainability Hub for a chance to be featured in an Earth Day blog post. Photo submissions are accepted year-round, however photos submitted before April 30 and containing an “Earth Day” tag will be considered.
Call for Applications: Future Organic Farmer Education Grant
The California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) Foundation is now accepting applications for educational grant funding from students currently enrolled in the U.S. who are pursuing a career in organic agricultural production. Applications must be submitted by May 6.
PLAN's Atlas Program
Post-Landfill Action Network's (PLAN) Atlas program is an assessment framework to support universities and colleges in creating zero waste strategic plans. Using a two-step approach, PLAN will work with campuses to assess infrastructure, policy and communication gaps, and provide baseline data on current waste management operations. The outcome of participating in the program is a Zero Waste Plan with a focus on infrastructure, policy, education and outreach that includes short term, mid-term and long-term initiatives.
The Green Scholars Program
The Green Scholars Program offers opportunities for students who represent disadvantaged, low-income and underrepresented backgrounds to receive partial and full scholarships to participate in The Green Program's international opportunities.
AASHE Sustainability Awards: Call for Submissions
Each year, AASHE bestows its awards on institutions and individuals who demonstrate a commitment to higher education sustainability. The award categories collectively recognize sustainability achievements and individuals conducting research on campus sustainability. Additionally, one award recognizes an individual for advancing sustainability in higher education over their lifetime. Submissions and nominations are due on May 10.
Request for Proposals: NextGen 2019 Grant
The NextGen Committee of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation is currently seeking proposals for new or existing programs that will help to reduce global warming, whether through direct carbon avoidance, climate communication, climate education, industry engagement or otherwise. The foundation intends to award one $100,000 grant to the organization with the best proposal, to fund work during the 2020 calendar year. The deadline to submit a request for proposal is July 12.
Georgia Drawdown Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Georgia Drawdown Project seeks two recent Ph.D.s to to participate in research and to collaborate with principal investigators and faculty from Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Georgia and Emory University, which comprise the core partners of the Georgia Climate Project. The team will deliver an assessment that identifies a set of 10-12 promising climate mitigation solutions for Georgia.

Change the Pallet Sign-On Letter
Change the Pallet, AASHE and ICLEI invite individuals to sign onto a letter asking suppliers to consider shipping to college and university campuses on lightweight, recyclable, corrugated cardboard pallets instead of wood or plastic, in an effort to reduce transport emissions.
Environmental Leadership Program National Fellowship
The Environmental Leadership Program is accepting applications for its 2019 National Fellowship Program, which offers leadership and skills training, national networking opportunities, and time for personal and professional reflection. Through immersive retreats, the curriculum is designed to help emerging leaders hone their leadership styles, improve their strategy and organizational development, and strengthen their outreach to diverse constituencies. The application deadline is July 15.
SIILK Network Mentorship Program
The Sustainable and Impact Investing Learning and Knowledge (SIILK) Network mentorship program aims to engage students with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including students of color and low-income students, with a goal of creating a more diverse pipeline of finance professionals with a solid grasp on sustainable investing. Coordinated by the Intentional Endowments Institute, the Sustainable and Impact Investing Learning and Knowledge Network brings together students, faculty, administrators, trustees, and financial professionals to provide real-world experience in sustainable investing and build professional networks.

Harvard Executive Education for Sustainability Leadership Informational Sessions
The informational sessions will discuss the Executive Education for Sustainability Leadership program by providing an overview of the course frameworks, which center around organizational design to optimize and accelerate impact for sustainability and innovation. The Executive Education for Sustainability Leadership program is being offered Oct. 21 - 25, 2019. Information sessions are planned for April 17, May 16, and June 10.
